An original British wool cap that can be used as a neck warmer or as extra padding under a helmet.
The cap was introduced in the late 19th century as informal headwear for British soldiers working in army camps. During the First World War, it became widespread in the trenches as practical protection against the cold and was also popular during night operations. In the Second World War, it was used by British and Canadian units, including commandos, where it served as a versatile and unmarked headgear. After the war, it was gradually replaced by more modern variants, but in some units it is still used today as a traditional part of the kit.
