The smell of the woollen blanket is due to lanolin, a natural substance (chemically related to wax) found in wool, which gives the fibre its fire resistance and overall durability. It is not a chemical. If the smell is strong or bothers you, do not wash the blanket under any circumstances. You could damage the fibres. Spread the blanket out in the fresh air and leave it to air for a few days.
Wool products are ‘self-cleaning’. However, if you do need to wash the blanket, do not under any circumstances use any chemical detergents or fabric softeners. This could damage the natural properties of the fibres. Use cold water and, if your washing machine can accommodate the blanket, use the delicate cycle. Dry it flat out, in the shade, away from direct heat sources or in direct sunlight.
