The smell of the wool blanket comes from lanolin, a natural substance (chemically related to wax) contained in wool that provides the fibre with fire resistance and overall durability. It is not a chemical additive. If the smell is strong or bothersome, do not wash the blanket under any circumstances. You could damage the fibres. Lay the blanket out in fresh air and let it ventilate for several days.
Wool products are "self-cleaning". However, if you really need to wash the blanket, never use chemical detergents or fabric softeners. This could damage the natural properties of the fibre. Use cold water and, if your washing machine is large enough, a gentle cycle. Dry flat in the shade, away from direct heat sources or sunlight.
