Supermarine Spitfire - the hero in the Battle of Britain
One of the defining moments of World War II was the Battle of Britain. The core of the British fighter force during the battle consisted of two types of aircraft - the Supermarine Spitfire and the Hurricanes. Perhaps unfair to the Hurricanes but for the British, the Spitfite might have been the hero, maybe even greater than the pilots themselves.
The Battle of Britain began in the summer of 1940 but the day of the fiercest aerial combat was Sunday, September 15th. It was supposed to be the final, decisive blow by the German air force. The Luftwaffe, specifically Göring, sent around 400 bombers and 700 fighters into battle. Most of the RAF squadrons, rougly 300 aircraft opposed them. It was essential to prevent the aggressors from penetrating further inland, so the British planes attacked as soon as the Germans reached the coastline. Unlike the British, German fighters had to escort the bombers. The German Messerschmitts could not compete with the Spitfires in terms of climbing ability. The RAF successfully repelled the massive Luftware attack on September 15th. British losses were about half of those suffered by the Germans.
