And what exactly is a "percolator"? It is a device in the pot used for
simple coffee filtration. The name comes from the word percolation, which
means "passage through a permeable substance, especially for the purpose of extracting a soluble component. When brewing coffee, the solvent is water, the permeable substance is ground coffee beans, and the soluble components are compounds that give coffee its colour, taste, aroma and stimulating properties.
Water circulates through the coffee (it is pushed up through a tube and then flows down due to gravity) until the desired "strength" of the brewed coffee is achieved.
