The Peltonen M23 Ranger Cub 80CrV2 is a compact Finnish fixed-blade knife designed for bushcraft, hiking, woodcarving and everyday carry. Despite its small size, it offers a robust construction, a comfortable grip and a blade strong enough for a wide range of small tasks in the great outdoors. With a total length of just 165 mm and a weight of 80 g, it can easily be carried on a belt, around the neck or in a pocket.
The 65 mm long, 3.3 mm thick blade is made from high-quality 80CrV2 carbon steel, processed in Finland by Laurin Metalli Oy. The steel is characterised by high toughness, resistance to mechanical stress and good edge retention. Thanks to a differentiated heat treatment process, the cutting edge itself achieves a hardness of 62 HRC, whilst the spine of the blade has a hardness of 59 HRC. This combination ensures the cutting edge retains high wear resistance whilst minimising the risk of chipping or breaking during demanding work.
The Drop Point blade utilises the traditional Scandinavian ‘Scandi Grind’ with a micro-facette and a 20° cutting angle, which provides good control during precision cutting and woodworking. The blade has no additional protective coating. Its surface combines dark matt areas with polished ground sections, creating a striking contrast and emphasising the traditional character of Finnish knives. The dark colour is caused by natural oxidation of the surface during the heat treatment of the steel. As carbon steel is used, the blade must be cleaned regularly, kept dry and treated with oil to prevent rust. The spine of the blade also allows it to be used with a fire striker.
The ergonomically shaped handle, made from thermoplastic elastomer (TPE), provides a secure and comfortable grip even when wet or in cold weather. The material is resistant to wear and tear, impacts, chemicals and temperature fluctuations. The handle’s distinctive texture helps maintain control of the knife during fine carving and other tasks requiring precise blade guidance. The handle, approximately 100 mm long, offers ample space for a comfortable grip despite the knife’s compact dimensions.
The package includes a durable Kydex sheath, which offers good resistance to impacts, moisture, chemicals and temperature fluctuations. The sheath is fitted with a paracord lanyard for wearing the knife around the neck and also allows for horizontal carrying on a belt. A strap with a one-way Pull-the-DOT® snap fastener ensures secure attachment, preventing accidental opening whilst on the move. The sheath is also compatible with the Tek-Lok mounting system and can be adapted for both right- and left-handed users. It is supplied in a right-handed configuration as standard. The knife was designed by Juha-Pekka Peltonen, a former captain in the Finnish Armed Forces.
